Patti Smith is an American singer-songwriter, musician, author, and poet, widely known as the “punk poet laureate.” She was born on December 30, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois. Smith became an influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album “Horses.”
Regarded as one of the pioneers of punk rock, Smith’s music is a blend of rock, punk, and spoken poetry. Her lyrics are noted for their poetic elements, while her live performances often include spoken reflections between songs.
Some of her most popular songs include “Because the Night” (co-written with Bruce Springsteen), “Gloria,” “Pissing in a River,” and “People Have the Power.” In addition to her musical career, Smith is an accomplished author. Her memoir “Just Kids,” which details her relationship with the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2010.
