Abel’s father Makkonen and mother Samra Tesfaye immigrated to Ontario, Canada in the 1980s
Abel was raised in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church culture until his youth, but he started using drugs at the age of 11.
Abel left the school and his family in 2007, while at the same time continuing his student life at the West Hill Collegiate Institute and the Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute.
He associated the stage name “The Weeknd” with his sudden disappearance on a weekend and started using it in his musical works.
He removed the letter “e” from the word “Weekend” in order not to be confused with them because there is a music group called Weekend in Canada.
